Iron Duke was reduced to a trainig role when partially disarmed under the Washington treaty. Just before the outbreak of WW2, she was moved to Scapa Flow and became the headquarters ship in the base. She was attacked by German bombers whilst moored near Lyness and was badly damaged and settled on the bottom. She was refloated and moved to a more sheltered anchorage in the Flow and continued in service for the rest of the war.
