The McDonnell Phantom was built in larger numbers than any other western aircraft; it served both in the US forces and in numerous other countries. From September 1964 onwards Great Britain received its own modified version of a Phantom with Rolls Royce Spey engines, which would later be used as a fighter interceptor on account of its enormous performance range. This was the Royal Navy F-4K Phantom FG. 1 and the improved F-4M Phantom FGR.2 for the RAF, that was used by 15 front line squadrons in Great Britain and Germany between 1969 and 1992. Heavily armed, it was used for some years for attack missions and also for reconnaissance. In the eighties the grey liveried FGR.2 replaced the Lightning in the fighter interceptor role.

Model kit of the Phantom FGR 2. Great Britain received from September 1964 a specially modified Phantom version with Rolls Royce Spey engines. This resulted in the improved Phantom FGR.2. for the Royal Air Force, which was used as an interceptor on 15 squadrons between 1969 and 1992.
