Mr Burtt appears to have started in the joinery business with the production of beehives in Gloucester and expanded into the coal trade. He operated several wagons to obtain supplies for the coal business, applying this distinctive style with full-height B and R book-end lettering. Perhaps with his joinery business well-known to the people of Gloucester for the beehives Mr Burtt felt adding 'coal merchant' was unnecessary.
