In 1940 HMS Hero was operating off Norway coast, she was a member 2nd DD Flotilla tasked to cover convoys between Alexandria and Malta. On 19th July 1940 in company with others ships, Hero intercepted two Italian light cruisers and in the action Bartolomeo Colleoni was sank. On 28th May 1942 Hero and two others ships sank U-boat U-568 and in June 1942 forced U-559 to surface. A special squad had managed to gain the code book.
