The entire class of 30 locomotives was built at Dubs & Company (Glasgow) in 1897 to the designs of the LSWRs' Scottish locomotive engineer Dugald Drummond. The class proved to be well designed and built, requiring few modifications and surviving as a complete class until 1957. Using a boiler common to the M7 class 0-4-4 tank locos and having a useful mid-range tractive effort of 22,487lbs no doubt contributed to the survival of a quite small class of goods engines.
