The Germans were well known for experiments with large artillery pieces and serious work on the Leopold and its twin Robert began in 1934.Firing a 550lb shell for 11 miles the Leopold became known as Anzio Annie with its use against the Americans during the DDay landings at Anzio.Despite repeated Naval and air bombardment Leopold could not be silenced and it was not until the breakout that the Allies discovered the gun was mounted on railcars and being hidden in tunnels. Although damaged the Allies were able to salvage Leopold and it was returned to the United States where it remains on display at the Aberdeen proving grounds in Maryland and is the only Railway gun to have survived WW2. Fully mounted on its railcars Leopold was nearly 100 feet long.
