The colossal Ferdinand/Elefant 65-tonne tank destroyer was conceived out of ninety or so unwanted hulls and chassis manufactured by Porsche AG for an unsuccessful Tiger design. In the end it was decided to fit the newly developed Krupp 8.8cm PaK 43/2 gun onto this hull. This precise long-range weapon was augmented by heavy armour protection (200mm thick on the front plates). The Ferdinand made its combat debut at Kursk, where the ninety or so vehicles managed to destroy 320 Russian tanks. After the titanic Battle of Kursk, surviving examples were modified, and many ended up in Italy to fight again as the Elefant!
