The GWR Birmingham division had several routes where more than 2 coach sets were regularly required, particularly to the larger towns surrounding Birmingham like Leamington Spa, Warwick and Stratford-on-Avon. Hence on the Birmingham division 'B set' was a four coach train formed brake third - composite - composite - brake third (B3-C-C-B3), not the common 2-coach formations used in the south west. These trains were hauled by a number of locomotive types, most commonly the GWR 45xx small prairie (Lionheart Trains) and later 5101 class large prairie (Heljan) tank engines, though the 43xx 2-6-0 moguls (Heljan) were appreciated for longer runs as the tenders held more water.
