Released to service in February 1933 number 5809 was stored at Swindon until May when the engine was sent to Pontrilas, also working from Ebbw Junction and Pontypool Road sheds before transferring to Croes Newydd (Wrexham) for Bala shed in December. Following an overhaul at Stafford Road (Wolverhampton) works 5809 moved to the Bristol area for the end of October 1936, based at St Philips Marsh shed and frequently outstationed at Yatton. Bristol Bath Road shed took over the Yatton engine in 1940, though after nationalisation only the main shed of Bath Road was recorded. Stored in April 1956 work for 5809 was soon found at Machynlleth on the Cambrian line, from where the engine was withdrawn from service in August 1959.

The 58xx class of 0-4-2T tank engines were built concurrently with the 48xx class locomotives and to the same design but without the mechanical and electrical connections for working with auto trailers. These 'non-auto' engines were sent to lines were a new, modern engines were needed, but push-pull working was not used. These duties varied from classic rural branches like the Malmesbury line to the GWRs scenic route through the wild Snowdonia foothills from Bala to Blaenau Ffestiniog. Often these lines had significant goods traffic and the use of a dual purpose locomotive was more practical, a 58 being equally at home with a short goods train as with a passenger train of elderly 4-wheel coaches, which were still in use on the Malmesbury train when the 58s arrived, 2-coach B sets or a single brake composite.
On some lines trains ran 'mixed' with a few goods wagons following the passenger coach and a goods train brake van carrying the guard at the very rear. The later 74xx panniers (also available from Dapol) joined the 58xx engines in the British Railways period.
Suitable coaches are available from Slaters (4 wheel coach kits) and Dapol (single coaches and 2-coach B sets) ranges of O gauge models.
