Ford Fiesta Mk1 1100cc ‘Sandpiper II’, Roman Bronze & Solar Gold

Ford have a tradition of raiding their accessories catalogue to create limited editions offering better value for money by including many optional extras as standard. The original Fiesta Sandpiper was one such limited edition and launched in 1979 sporting metallic Roman Bronze paintwork over non-metallic Cordoba Beige. It was based on the 1.1L and all 2500 cars sold quickly so in March 1981 Ford launched the similar Sandpiper II, which this time offered dual-tone metallic paintwork; Roman Bronze over Solar Gold. Other features included wider 4.5J rims, two-tone chocolate Velour and tan 'Verona' fabric trim, tinted glass and a removable screened glass sunroof. It sold well and 4000 were produced although few are left.

Modelled as it was when first registered in August 1981, this Sandpiper had one lady owner until 2008 when, showing just over 60,00 miles, it was bought by Dale Jeffs for a bargain £130! He subtly modified the car, lowering its stance with coil-overs and fitting gold crosspoke alloy wheels. It was much admired at Ford shows but was then stripped for a restoration that never happened and many of the components were sold separately. It is now owned by Middlesex-based 'TrustFord' technician Alex Chrishop who bought it as a stripped shell in 2014 and is currently restoring it. Although he is intending to retain the Sandpiper's unique livery he has already fitted a 1.8-litre Zetec engine, fitted with 4 'Ninja' bike carburettors!
