Built at the Vulcan Foundry as D6734 in 1961 the locomotive was sent new to Hull Dairycoates shed and worked on the Eastern region through the 1970s and early 80s. D6734 was renumbered to 37034 under the TOPS numbering system in December 1973, along with a repaint into the BR corporate blue livery.
Sent to Scotland in 1985 to work from Motherwell and Eastfield sheds the locomotive was moved to South Wales in August 1986 pending entry into the refurbishment programme.

Refurbishment was carried out at Crewe works over the end of 1986, being released for testing in January 1987 as 37704 with revised gearing and ballasted up to a total weight of 120 tonnes for hauling heavy freight trains. During the refurbishment the headcode boxes were removed and Railfreight triple grey livery applied with coal sector logos.

Before Privatisation the locomotive was allocated to the Trainload shadow freight company, all of the shadow companies being purchased by the Wisconsin Central railroad and refomed into the national English, Welsh and Scottish Railway, EW&S. 37704 and was one of the first to receive the new maroon and gold EW&S livery in November 1996.
This model recreates this colourful livery which the locomotive carried throughout its remaining years in service working around South Wales, into the Midlands with trips recorded to Edinburgh and the North East. 37704 was stored serviceable at the end of 2002, but evidently reactivated before the autumn 2003 leaf clearance season. However some fault must have occurred as the locomotive was allocated for component recovery in October.
Although listed for disposal in 2005 37704 was not withdrawn from EWS stock until February 2008, having been purchased by Harry Needle Rail Ltd for further component recovery, before the remains of the locomotive were cut up at TJ Thompson’s, Stockton yard in June 2009.
