Steadily improving models from Dapol and Graham Farish from the early 1950's locomotives to todays heavy freight diesels.

Dapol N BR 33030 Class 33 Bo-Bo Diesel Locomotive Blue 2D-001-000

A detailed model of the BRCW class 33 is a very useful addition to the N gauge range. The model features a detailed bodyshell with etched grilles and directional lighting. Power is supplied by a quality 5-pole motor fitted in a die-cast chassis with a low-friction drive for huge pulling power and excellent slow running.

These locomotives were built for the Southern region and equipped for electric train heating supply. Even in their early years the 33s travelled widely, reaching Doncaster regularly with cement trains. In later years with electricity replacing steam for train heating on secondary routes the 33s took over the Portsmouth to Cardiff services, the same locomotives and coaches being used on Cardiff to Crewe and Manchester trains via Shrewsbury.
The widespread use of the 33s makes them an ideal choice as a distinctive locomotive for layout-sized long-distance passenger trains.

Graham Farish N BR D3785 Class 08 0-6-0 Diesel Shunter Green Late Crest 371-021A
The class 08 has been the standard heavy shunting locomotive in use on Britains railways since the 1950's. Many are still active today, shunting in industrial sites, for mainline freight companies and on heritage railways. This long lifespan makes the type ideal for almost any BR era layout and with some preserved examples available for hire a green painted 08 would be quite at home with the most modern diesels.

Dapol N BR 27108 Class 27 Birmingham Sulzer Bo-Bo Blue 2D-013-000
A detailed model of the second series of the Birmingham design Sulzer engined type 2s. Designated class 27 by BR these locomotives quickly migrated to Scotland, where their reliability was appreciated on the highland lines.

The 27/1 sub-class was created to improve services on the Glasgow Edinburgh shuttle service, using two class 27 locomotives, one at either end of a set of BR Mk.2 coaches, in place of multiple unit trains. 24 locomotives were specially overhauled to prepare them for the rigours of continual high speed operation and automatic fire supression was fitted, allowing the locomotive to operate remotely. This dedicated fleet was first classified 27/1, then class 27/2 was created to identify those locomotives also fitted with diesel generators providing electric train heating power.
Dapol are releasing models of the 27/2 type as non-motorised dummy locomotives, the single powered 27/1 model being quite capable of hauling a realistic train and the dummy locomotive at the rear.

Initially sent to the London area to dieselise suburban passenger services these locomotives were tested on other duties, including on the Highland Lines in Scotland. Proving very satisfactory on these long, remote routes both classes 26 and 27 are best-known for their associations with the highlands, with the 27s being most commonly deployed on the West Highland line to Oban, Fort William and Mallaig.

Bachmann Graham Farish N Gauge 371-032A BR 20048 Class 20 Bo-Bo Diesel Locomotive with Indicator Discs BR Blue

Bachmann have completely updated the class 20 model for the Graham Farish range with new tooling for the chassis to incorporating a DCC decoder socket and new more detailed bodyshells.

20063 is one of the early batch of class 20s with steam-era train description discs. The locomotives were never modified, excepting where the discs were lost or removed these were carried throughout their service lives. Hence this model of 20063 is painted in the BR blue livery and, completed with a weathered finish, is quite typical of the faded appearance of class 20s in the 1980s. Reliability kept them well away from the paintshops!

Graham Farish N 371-050C Class 04 D2283 BR Green Warning Stripes
Possibly the smallest ready-to-run British N gauge model, the Graham Farish 04 class diesel shunter does not compromise on detail.

A tiny can motor mounted in the front of the locomotive has been combined with a chassis designed to maximise the weight available for traction, while keeping the cab windows unobstructed. This provides smooth slow running characteristics and excellent train hauling capabilities, even the test and development model was able to pull 7-coach trains.
The external detailing reaches new standards for N gauge, with separate wire handrails fitted to the cab and bonnet, wire sand pipes and fine guard irons.

Bachmann Graham Farish N gauge 371-054 NCB ex-BR class 04 diesel shunter D2332 named Lloyd in NCB yellow livery.

Rail transport has always been best suited to bulk loading and the transfer of small loads to the road transport through the 1960s allowed British Railways to specialise in profitable full train load business. Local goods yards were closed and shunting much reduced, making much of BRs' fleet of low powered shunting engines redundant. Many of these quite new shunting engines were sold to industrial users, often replacing steam locomotives and the 204bhp Gardiner engined class 04s were popular with the coal board and steel industry. To ensure locomotives are highly visible many industrial users paint them in bright yellow.

Bachmann Graham Farish N Gauge 371-063 Class 03 D2383 BR Green Wasp Stripes Weathered

Bachmann Graham Farish N gauge model 371-063 of BR class 03 shunting engine D2383 painted in green livery with wasp warning stripes, later lion holding wheel crest and completed in a weathered finish.

The Graham Farish models of the BR class 03 and similar 04 are excellent miniature recreations of the BR small 204bhp shunting engines. The bodyshells have a very high level of detailing with clear cab windows and designed provision for many detail differences. The mechanism is smooth running, even at slow shunting speeds and provides reliable operation with sufficient weight to allow for a suitable short train to be moved.

BR class 03 shunters were the standard 'small' shunting engines, fitted with Gardner 204bhp engines and mechanical transmissions. These engines were used at smaller shunting yards and to move wagons between the large marshalling yards and customers' sidings. These ecconomical little engines were also very popular with industrial users, the engines and gearboxes being familiar to many truck fitters and many have been sold to private operators and heritage railways.

Graham Farish N 371-180 Class 40 D211 'Mauretania' BR Green Indicator Discs

New tooling is being prepared, providing a very welcome upgrade for the N gauge class 40 model, which will include directional lighting, NEM couplers and Next18 DCC decoder socket.

The BR class 40 locomotives were among the earliest production mainline diesel locomotives to enter service, being derived directly from the final Southern Railway experimental locomotive, number 10203. Fitted with the highly reliable English Electric 16SVT engine set at 2000bhp inside a conventionally built bodyshell and riding on heavy 4-axle bogies BR called these 'type 4' locomotives, intended to undertake the heaviest of duties. Deployed on West Coast express passenger services the massive weight of these early diesels made them appear poor replacements for the fast and powerful Stanier pacifics, but as electrification progressed their robust construction made them superb heavy freight engines. Sometimes nicknamed 'Big D' for their impressive bulk and power the 40s were later referred to as 'whistlers' from the whistling sounds from the single-stage turbo chargers, a trait shared with class 20s.

Graham Farish N 371-358 Class 60 60021 Colas

Colas have recently purchased a number of class 60 locomotives from DB Schenker, this model is finished in their bright orange and yellow livery as 60021.

The Graham Farish class 60 models sets a very high standard for detail in N gauge. Careful design of the chassis has allowed the large grilles to retain sufficient depth to show the body structure members and internal equipment, replicating these visible parts on the real locomotives. Drive to both bogies is maintained from a centrally mounted motor, allowing realistic length trains to be hauled.
