Rail transport is well suited to the haulage of bulk loads over significant distances. BR developed new wagons in the 1970s, focusing on the efficient haulage of bulk loads, using higher capacity wagons to reduce the empty vehicle weight. Combined with new designs of frames and quick acting air brakes the new and longer 4-wheel and 100-ton bogie wagons can travel safely at higher train speeds, reducing transit time. An increase in wagon leasing by customers and traffic from Europe has also seen the reappearance of bright advertising liveries on many types of wagons.
Bachmann OO RNA Nuclear Flask Barrier Wagon 38-007
Model of a BR HEA type household coal hopper wagon in railfreight flame red and grey livery lettered with TOPS code RNA as a wagon in use as a barrier wagon for nuclear flask trains.

In the 1980s the drop in house coal consumption made a large number of the air braked HEA coal hopper wagons surplus. Some of these were put to use as barrier wagons for the dedicated nuclear flask trains, one coupled between the flask wagon(s), the locomotive and guards' brake van.

Wagons allocated to these duties were relettered with TOPS code RNA to make them identifyable from the still active HEA hoppers in coal service.
The barrier wagons' hopper doors were often unservicable, sealed or removed, making them unsuitable for coal loading. In some cases the bodywork was later removed and replaced with ballast weights.

Hornby Railways OO Gauge R6771 Depressed Centre Chevron or V Form Pressure Discharge Tank Wagon Mineral Industries Ltd.

Expected September 2016

These distinctive tank wagons were designed in the late 1970s to provide a self-clearing pressure discharge tank wagon for carrying bulk powder materials. The designers arranged the two ends of the tank to slope together towards the centre of the wagon, giving them the depressed centre look, often described as chevron or V tank. A significant number of these tanks were built for the cement companies, replacing the older BR Presflo tanks on bulk cement distribution. A small fleet is still in service with EWS/DBS

This model is finished as a tank in operation with Mineral Industries Limited.

One of a pair of specially commissioned British Leyland liveried curtain sided ferry wagons.

A small fleet of these wagons were operated for British Leyland to transport body panels, engines and other motor vehicle parts between factories. At it's peak the British Leyland group had 46 factories in the UK, plus assembly plants or supplier agreements with France, Belgium, Holland, Denmark & Spain. Many plants specialised in specific components, so these vans were kept busy supplying the assembly lines.

This model is lettered Leyland Cars alongside the company logo. Standard Hornby tension-lock couplers are supplied with each wagon.

Bachmann Branchline OO Gauge 33-832 EWS ex-Southern Railway 25-Ton Queen Mary Bogie Guards Brake Van EWS Maroon & Gold

The Southern Railway constructed a number of bogie brake vans to provide smooth riding vans for guards on express goods and parcels trains. Initial examples being rebuilt from redundant electric unit parcels cars these vans ride like a coach, in additon to having good weight and an efficient brake.

Many of these vans survived in BR ownership, latterly with the engineering departments who appreciated the combination of a mess/riding van and tool storage in the verandahs either end. Several examples were still in service at privatisation and passed into the ownership of EWS, receiving the companys' maroon & gold paint.

Bachmann Branchline OO Gauge 37-535C BR Design 20-Ton Goods Guards' Brake Van BR Railfreight Grey & Flame Red Livery

The BR standard brake vans could still be found in service in the 1980s, many receiving the new Railfreight grey and red livery. The TOPS CAR code denoted a guards' brake van fitted with through pipes for both vacuum and air brake systems.

Brake vans were not normally needed on goods trains, however trains of especially dangerous goods including nuclear flask trains conveyed a brake van so the guards would not have to pass the hazardous cars in the event of a derailment. Many vans were also usefully employed as riding vans for train crews and shunters, coupled to  class 08 shunting locomotives.

Bachmann Branchline OO Gauge 38-140IG VDA Covered Box Van Army Green Internal User
South/South West region exclusive model - will be available from our Plymouth store.

The VDA first started to appear around 1974, and were built with an external frame on the ends with no end ventilator and hinged centre doors and separate quarter doors at the outer ends. These could carry 31 tons at speeds of up to 60 mph but this was reduced to twenty one tons for speeds up to 70 mph. This proved to be one of the more successful designs and remained very much in demand throughout the 1990's, including internal use for the British Army to transfer stock around different depots. Their ease of access makes them ideal for loading and unloading with fork lift trucks etc. They are believed to be the most common type of air braked van built by BR.

Bachmann 38-625 model of a pair of BR FGA Freightliner container flat outer wagons.
New model announced 2014.

These were the first type of container flat wagons built by British Rail and formed into sets of wagons, each wagons being designed to carry 3 20-foot containers. As these formations of (usually) five wagons were intended to be fixed formations the outer wagons were fitted with side buffers and conventional couplings at one end only. The inner end of the wagons and both ends of the inner wagons had fixed bar couplings which were intended to be uncoupled only at repair depots.

The Freightliner flat models feature details such as linkage, pipe work, close couplings, in-board disc-brake detail and sprung buffers. For fixed rake operation the models feature fixed bar couplings between wagons with standard tension lock couplings in NEM pockets at the outer ends. The wagon deck is of die-cast metal construction, giving weight and stability to the vehicle.

To model this arrangement Bachmann are producing the outer FGA wagons as a pair, with separate inner wagons being produced to create a longer 'set' to match the train length space available.
Each wagon length approx 260mm/10.25in.

Model 38-651A Pricing and release to be confirmed

A new deatiled model of the Metalair design pressure discharge bulk powder tank wagons used principally for bulk cement traffic. The developing technologies for pressure discharge systems and lining of wagons with materials promoting the clearing of the load allowed the design of self-clearing bulk powder wagons to be simplified. These cylindrical tanks replaced the BR Presflo covered hoppers and chevron style tank wagons in cement service.

This model is painted in a plain grey scheme, a colour which helped disguise cement spillages. Many of these wagons were owned by leasing companies, so were given a plain livery so that a change of leasor would not require extensive repainting.

Introduced in March 2003 and built by Wagony Swidinica in Poland, in total 301 wagon pairs have been delivered. The Megafret wagon was developed to convey the taller ISO containers within the BR loading gauge, greatly expanding the rail market share of deep-sea container buisness.
The wagons are designed to run in permanently coupled pairs, with each wagon having standard coulings and drawgear at one end only, freeing up clear deck space to accomodate the 45-foot containers in a similar wagon length as is used by a single wagon carrying one 40-foot container.
