Always a true star among an outstanding class of locomotives 92220 performed many last rites, including hauling the last Pines Express routed over the Somerset & Dorset. On withdraw from service Evening Star joined the national collection and was returned to mainline service for railtour operations in the 1980s.
92220 Evening Star, being the last steam locomotive to be built for British Railways, was uniquely completed by Swindon, painted in express passenger lined green livery and complete with a GWR style copper capped chimney and brass nameplates.
92220 Evening Star was always a special engine, especially when transferred to Bath for service on the Somerset & Dorset line where the powerful 9Fs were able to hauling heavy passenger trains over the steeply graded Mendips route unaided. As the last new steam locomotive built for British Railways 92220 joined the national collection on withdraw and has seen occasional service on heritage railways and mainline railtours.
