These small 0-6-0 tank engines were built by the LB&SCR, their exceptional power for such a tiny locomotive earned them the name 'terriers' from the crews. Light enough to traverse many minor routes and branchlines barred to larger engines the Victorian terriers were still at work long after nationalisation. Many were purchased by light railway companies, proving ideal locomotives for their lightly-built lines with a significant improvement in power and economy over earlier engines.
The Weston Clevedon & Portishead Railway purchased 2 terriers from the Southern during the inter-war period, this is the second locomotive, numbered 4. This engine was overhauled by the Southern before delivery to the Somerset light railway painted in the then current SR lined green livery. No 4 was relettered at Clevedon shed and served until the closure of the WC&P early in WW2 due to the loss of the lines' daytrip holiday trade. No 4 then passed to the Great Western in part settlement of payments owed to the larger company, mostly working around the Bristol area until withdrawn early in 1948.
