On March 30, 1945 Germany gathered any and all available men from replacement units, schools to form the Ulrich Von Hutten Infantry Division. The Division was named for Ulrich von Hutten born 1488, an outspoken critic of the Catholic Church and a supporter of the Lutheran Reformation. He died of a venereal disease in 1523. The Ulrich Von Hutten Infantry Division first saw action on April 12, 1945 against American troops at Bitterfeld and by the end of April had been captured by the Americans at Tangermunde.
