In 1938 the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS) was created. The need for first aid workers had decreased but there was an increasing need for driving mechanical transport. To fill this need and lessen the demand for men freeing them up to perform combat duty, the Women’s Transport Service was created. This unit was headquartered in Camberley and later became known as No. 1 TCMT (Training Centre Mechanical Training) some places it is referred to as No. 1 MTTC (Motor Transport Training Centre). The most notable person to attend No was Princess Elizabeth now Queen Elizabeth II.
