In December 1941 it was decided to renumber the Anti Tank Battalions in the 600, 700 and 800 series. The 93rd, 94th and 99th Infantry Anti-Tank Battalions became the 893rd, 894th and 899th Tank Destroyer Battalions. After fighting in North Africa the 894th landed in Italy in October 1943 and on January 25 1944 were transferred to Anzio. Their task was to support the British troops and equipment. On February 3rd the Germans began a counter attack that cut off elements of British troops and of the 894th. For about 10 days the 894th M10s made heavy use of their M7 main guns as well as repelling several infantry attacks by using their .50 cal machine guns. Eventually the 894th and British troops were able to break out and reach the safety of their own lines.
