The Tiger I packed a 56 calibre, 88mm cannon that could penetrate a 138mm steel board from a range of 1,500 meters, a frightening prospect for the opposing Allied Forces. Also intimidating was the reality that the frontal armour plating of the Tiger was 100mm thick and and even on the sides measured 80mm, compared to the M4 Sherman's 51mm and 38mm. The German Tiger I was first developed in May 1941 and went into mass production in August 1942, having been spurred on by appearance of the T34 tank, which was proving diffcult for Panzer III's and IV's to deal with. Partway through early-production, alterations were made to reinforce the gunner's sight and change the form of the tank's air cleaners. The Tiger I was deployed to both the African and Russian fronts and made up an important element of Germany's major tank divisions during the last half of World War II. But it was expensive to produce and difficult to transport so was never available in sufficient numbers.
