Historical note: In the summer of 1942, mass production of a new modification of the LaGG-3 fighter began, on which the water-cooling engine was replaced by a more powerful air-cooled M-82 engine. As a result, the aircraft acquired a characteristic “lobed” profile and outstanding flight characteristics, and the name changed - the aircraft received the designation La-5. This aircraft turned out to be very successful and helped many Soviet pilots become aces: on La-5 in the 63rd Guards Regiment, Alexei Maresyev, who returned to service after amputation of both legs, fought and won his first victory; on La-5 July 6, 1943 over the Kursk Bulge, the pilot of the 88th GAIAP A.K. Gorovets in one battle shot down 9 German Ju 87 dive bombers at once.
