The M109A2 is the second upgraded version of the M109 Self propelled howitzer, the most widely used and longest serving heavy artillery in the army history. Production of the A2 started in 1978 and its first delivery to the U.S. Army took place in 1979 by which the M109 series production already exceeded 4000 pieces. As an upgraded version of the M109A1, A2 incorporated and number of Reliability, Availability, and Maintainabilty (RAM) improvements internally and externally. Major features include the integration of an inertial navigation system (INS), an additional sub-machine gun, an improved recoil mechanism for the M178 gun mount, an M185 cannon, an enhanced hydraulic system and a lengthened turret bustle for extra ammunition. The A2 howitzer is able to use any world-standard 155mm ammunition and is capable of non-line-of-slight firing. Its fuel capacity and running gear allows a cruising range of 220 mile at a maximum speed of 35 miles per hour. With its combination of extreme mobility and additional armaments, the M109A2 has been the core armored combat support for the U.S. artillery since it entered service in the 1970s.
