Ford created a new performance badge in November 1980 when they launched the XR3, the first of what became a range of XRs. The example modelled was built in September 1982, and registered in October to Mr I.C.W. Hulson by Ford dealers Appleyards in Newcastle-under-Lyme. Mr J.W. Hockenhull acquired it in 1985, used it until 1993 then placed it in dry-storage with 101,000 miles showing. It was unearthed in 2008 and listed on eBay. XR Owners Club Member Stuart Trowell, from Burton-on-Trent, who'd wanted one since childhood was the winning bidder and he continues to enjoy his first, and so far only, XR3.

Although the car was basically sound it needed extensive re-commissioning of consumable and rubber parts such as the fuel lines and brake systems. Stuart sensibly worked through the car then used it regularly for 18months to make sure it was mechanically sorted and reliable before having the rear wheel arches and front panel repaired and re-sprayed. Although the XR3 was an instant sales success Ford didn't rest on their laurels, launching a 5-speed gearbox in early 1982 and fitting injection and revised suspension in October the same year to create the XR3i. Thus Stuart's car is a very rare combination, one of only a few 'carburettor cars' produced with the 5-speed gearbox. It's also a rare colour as most were Sunburst Red or Black.
