Formed in Egypt in early 1936, 64 Squadron initially flew aircraft with no markings. Once the Abbasymia Crisis had subsided the squadron relocated to Martlesham Heath, Kent and adopted the unusual red and blue trellis design that K4520 displays, along with flight leaders's markings and the 'Spearhead' fighter unit symbol with inset badge on the fin.

The Hawker Demon was a 2 seat fighter derivative of the Hawker Hart bomber, designed by the legendary Sydney Camm, that entered service in March 1931 and was still in front line units in 1939, when quickly replaced by monoplanes. However, over 1000 had been built - a great success for the period - and the Demon was an important link in the development of the high performance fighters appearing towards the end of the 30's.
