A detailed model of one of the later Spitfires, the photo reconnaissance Mk.X!X, equiped with 5 a bladed propellor to absorb the greatly enhanced engine power. These were among the last Spitfires in service with the RAF, serving in the reconnaissance role, with three of the type being transferred to the RAF historic flight at the end of their service lifes. Through many changes in name, location and composition the historic flight grew into the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, with their permanent home at RAF Coningsby. The BBMF aircraft are often finished in schemes which, while not entirely accurate for the aircraft, commemorate individual pilots and missions. This model is finished in the blue scheme used by the photo reconnaissance aircraft during WW2, with invasion stripe recognition markings as the real aircraft has been finished by the BBMF to mark the role of the reconnaissance squadrons, providing a steady flow of intelligence as major operations like Overlord were planned and implemented.
