The F-4D was an improved "C" variant with most improvements being internal electronics and avionics. The F-4D entered operational service in April 1966 and joined the combat forces in Southeast Asia in May 1967. With the arrival of the "D" most of the "C" variant were reassigned to ground attack with the "D"s taking on the air-to-air interceptor role. In 1968 - 1969 a total of 825 "D" models were produced 793 for the USAF and 32 for the Iranian Air Force.

The first F-4D arrived in Iran on September 8, 1968 and assigned to 308th TFS and received serial 3-601. In 1974 the aircraft was sent to the 72nd TFS at Hor AB and assigned serial 3-663 but two years later it was sent back to the 308th TFS. By now Iran had a new 5-digit serial system with "3" standing for combat aircraft so 3-663 became 3-6697. In 1976 3-6697 was assigned to the 71st TFS based at Shiraz AB and during numerous conflicts flew several hundred successful combat missions.
