Following on from the successful introduction of working semaphore signals in N gauge Dapol are expanding their range to include colour light signals.
4 aspect signals, featuring two yellow aspects are used in areas of high traffic density. Between a green clear and red stop indication a driver will encounter first a 'double yellow' 'pre-caution' and a single yellow caution indication. These extra warnings allow 4 aspect signals to be positioned closer together, as a driver can begin to slow his train at a double-yellow signal, such that the speed on passing the single yellow signal is already reduced appropriately. This allows trains to safely move much closer together when approaching junctions and major stations while still providing plenty of distance for a fast express train to be brought to a smoothly controlled stop.
s the usual base signal for MAS (multiple aspect signal) schemes. Unlike the semaphore and 2 aspect signal which are either stop or warning signals the 3 aspect head combines these functions, allowing all signals to be stop signals and to act as the distant caution signal for the next signal. Drivers can rely on the 3 aspect signals to warn them when they are approaching a stop signal, while the stop indication can be cleared to caution as the train ahead moves beyond the next signal. Thus more trains can be passed through the system!
3 aspect signals are normally positioned about 1 mile apart to allow sufficient distance for a train to brake safely and without causing discomfort to passengers.
