Bachmann 38-502 OO Gauge BR COVHOP Covered Hopper British Industrial Sand Bauxite & Black
A detailed model of the BR diagram 1/210 covered hopper (COVHOP) wagon. Developed in the 1950s these wagons provided a self-clearing hopper discharge wagon suitable for bulk powder products which required reliable weather protection. Typical loads included salt, soda ash and dry sand, all of which would be lost or damaged by wind and rain, or fail to discharge through the hopper when wet.
The model, being produced in OO 'ready to run' for the first time, boasts a variety of great prototype detail features including replicated alternative braking systems, separately attached catwalks and filler lids.
Model painted in the later BR goods brown livery with TOPS wagon data panels and finished with British Industrial Sand (BIS) lettering.
BIS supplied sand for glass making and other industrial processes requiring a consistent grade of sand. A dedicated wagon fleet was used, it being essential that the sand was not contaminated. Wagons assigned to BIS services remained in traffic into the 1980s.
