Auto ballaster wagons are usually formed into sets of 5, although shorter sets are also sometimes used. The outer wagons are fitted with side buffers and conventional drawgear for coupling to locomotives and other wagons, while inner wagons have only central couplers. At laest one wagons with a generator is required with the set to provide electrical and hydraulic power for operating lights and discharge hopper doors.
