The Warship class locomotives combined two high-speed diesel engines with hydraulic transmission systems, providing a locomotive of over 2000bhp which was much lighter than contemporary designs. Although offering greater power, better acceleration and higher speed potential the machinery was much more complex than with diesel-electric locomotives and the hydraulics were withdrawn during the early blue era.
