The Hill design 0-6-2 suburban passenger tank engine of the Great Eastern Railway were adopted as a standard type by the LNER, given class designation N7 in the LNER locomotive classification system. The design was developed as the class expanded, changing from GER design to adopt the LNER standard features, like the round topped firebox and more efficient long-travel valves. The locomotives worked suburban passenger services from London Liverpool Street station, around the East End of London and secondary stopping services into Essex and the rural districts of East Anglia. Most of the class survived to enter British Railways service, running until disaplaced buy line closures and new diesel multiple unit trains.
