A total of 283 of these locomotives were built by the Great Eastern Railway from 1883 and used throughout the GER network. The J15s were known as the small goods engines, being the smallest and lightest of the GER goods engines, attributes which kept them in service on some of the lightly built East Anglian branches until the end of steam.
