The B1 utilised LNER standard design features, being a development of the earlier B17 class, simplified to a 2-cylinder format with a higher boiler pressure and larger cylinders to provide equivilent power output. The first of the class was names Sprigbok to mark a visit to the UK by Jan Smuts, then Prime Minster of South Africa and many of the early members of the class were given the names of other species of antelope. During the British Railways era the B1 class engines travelled widely, being extensively used on cross-country and inter-regional services.
