Era 9. DCC & Sound Fitted.
Seeking locomotives with improved performance and reliability the privatised Freightliner company sought to re-engineer their existing class 47 locomotives. Rebuilt by the original builders, Brush of Loughborough, the overhauled bodyshells were equiped with new Electro-Motive 12-cylinder 645 series engines, delivering 2,500bhp coupled to overhauled alternators recovered from class 56 locomotives. The robust and reliable class 47 traction motor were retaind, with updated electrical and control systems to improve reliability.
Freightliner later decided to invest in new class 66 and 70 locomotives, but the 57s have found new homes with DRS and West Coast Railways.
