Another first in British model railways from Bachmann, a factory-fitted DCC and sound equiped N gauge model joins the Graham Farish range.

This model of the later BR Derby design diesel multiple unit (DMU) trains was given TOPS class 108 and, having been built quite late in the DMU construction period, examples of this class survived until the end of 'first generation' diesel-mechanical DMUs in BR service. Driven by a motor fitted inside the guards' luggage van area the bodyshell is nicely details and features directional lighting.

Introduced in the 1950's these Diesel Multiple Units replaced steam-hauled passenger trains on branch lines and local services across the country. The glazed drivers cab partition provided good all-round visibility, including forward or backward, a feature greatly appreciated by passengers on scenic lines and much missed on the current generation of diesel units. The ability to couple units together to form longer trains when needed, still with just one driver and guard, made these units very flexible in service. The last units of this type were still in passenger service in 2000 and several units have been preserved.
