Number 58 was built by Armstrong Whitworth as a batch of five locomotives, numbered 57-61 which were built to the Midland Railway's 4F design under order number 5685. This order was effectively an extension to the Midland Railways order for Class 4F locomotives numbered 3932-3986, with the S&DJR locomotives being delivered during April 1922. Performing mixed traffic duties along the S&DJR route, these locomotives received a Class 5 rating for passenger work and Class 4 for goods traffic, in contrast to the Midland Railway's 4F classification. Upon absorption by the LMS in 1930, No. 58 became 4558 and continued to perform across the former S&D route, being allocated to Bath Green Park (71G) shed throughout its existence.

Following nationalisation our locomotive became No. 44558 in July 1948 and continued to perform mixed traffic services ranging from pick up goods trains and local stopping trains to piloting double headed express passenger trains such as the 'Pines Express' which ran between Manchester and Bournemouth, travelling along the former S&D line on a daily basis until September 1962. No. 44558 was the fourth former S&DJR 4F locomotive to be withdrawn in December 1964 with only No. 44560 lasting longer.
