BR Class 122 Single Car DMU

Gloucester single car DMU. The single car 'bubble car' DMUs are an ideal diesel era branch train for small layouts. Following shipping delays due to COVID shutdowns the Gloucester class 122 DMU models are expected to be delivered during Spring 2021. Dapol have confirmed that these models are in a container on the ship Ever Given. Yes, that is the ship that got stuck in the Suez Canal and is currently arrested under marine law. A revised release date will be available once the ship is released.
A highly detailed O gauge model of the Gloucester RCW built single car BR class 122 diesel multiple unit trains. 20 of these double-ended single car units were built in 1958 for branch lines with light off-peak traffic and frequent shuttle services services. Initially allocated to the Western region the class later dispersed across the country, The cars proved very flexible, being able to operate in multiple with other DMUs to add capacity as a substitute for a motor car and towards the end of their service many were used for driver route learning/refresher duties. 8 units have been preserved.
Model finished as car number 55018 in BR DMU green livery with speed whiskers.

Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) trains offered a effective way to reduce the costs of branch and stopping train services. DMU trains could be assembled into varying formations to provide an appropriate seat capacity and could be operated with just two crew, a driver and guard. Compared to steam locomotives the diesel units train required almost no daily maintenance time, eliminating not only the travelling fireman but often an entire extra crew needed for preparation and disposal. The guard could also sell tickets to passengers joining at smaller stations, reducing the need for stations to be staffed all day.

Single car units operated a number of suburban and several country branch lines where longer formations were not required outside of peak hours. For the modeller this allows an entire train to be formed, quite realistically, with just one coach from the late 1950s right through to the 2010s, the last single car units having only recently been replaced.

Dapol had a fully finished engineering prototype for the class 122 (fully detailed body and chassis) displayed at Alexandra Palace model railway exhibition in March 2018 alongside a body moulding prototype for the similar Pressed Steel class 121 single car unit.
