Private Owner Kits

A detailed model kit building a RCH 1887 standard design open wagon with 7 plank height sides and end door. This kit replicates the details of a wagon built by the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon company.

The 7 plank body provided a greater internal volume than the 6 plank type, allowing up to 12 tons of coal to be carried. Initially the larger wagons were ordered mostly by collieries, coal factors (dealers) and exporters, but by 1923 the 7 plank wagon was the most commonly used type in the coal trade. Collieries and exporters usually ordered wagons equipped with end as well as side doors so the wagons could be emptied quickly by tipping the coal through the end. Side and bottom doors were also normally fitted so the wagons could easily be used for manual or hopper unloading.

The sides are finished in the style recorded for a batch of 50 wagons built by the Gloucester RC&W Co in 1893, numbered 249-309.

The sides are finished in the style recorded for wagon number 62, the first wagon in a batch of 50 built in 1893 numbered 50 - 111 and is marked for return to Lydney S&W Ry., now the starting point of the Dean Forest steam railway.

Rectangular tank wagons appeared in the late 1880s for carrying tar, pitch and heavy oils. This kit builds a model of a tabk wagon built by the Charles Roberts company from the 1895 - 1906 period. These wagons continued in use into the early 1950s carrying tar by-products from gas works for refining into useful oil and chemical products. Rectangular tanks were retained for this traffic as the extra volume of a more modern cylindrical tank wagon was not needed.

A detailed model kit building a RCH 1907 standard design open wagon with 7 plank height sides, side and end doors finished in the livery of the Prince of Wales Collierie at Pontefract, owned by John Rhodes Ltd.
This kit replicates the details of 124 wagons built by the Charles Roberts company ordered in two batches. 64 wagons numbered 550 - 613 were ordered in March 1906, followed by a further 60 wagons numbered 614 - 629 and 654 - 707 in October.

This model kit for a 5 plank open wagon built by the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon company has features suggesting a RCH 1883 specification wagon. The small capacity 5 plank wagons, usually rated for 8 to 10 tons, were common in the Victorian era, but the low sides restricted the load capacity. By the early years of the 20th century the need for the larger volume capacity 7 plank wagon to contain loads of 10 tons of coal had become obvious. Quarrying companies loading stone where a 5 plank wagon comfortably contained 12 tons of product continued to use these lower sided wagons until nationalisation

5 plank Gloucester open coal wagon kit with pre-printed sides to build a model of Bristol coal merchant Poundsbery wagon number 1.
Poundsbery eventually ordered 4 wagons from the Gloucester RC&W Co. though only number 1 built in 1896 was known to have carried the green livery, later wagons being recorded as painted black.

The 1923 specification standardised many more sizes and components, as a result  the differences between builders were greatly reduced and this kit can be finished as a wagon built by many of the wagon builders. The 1923 specification also introduced the use of oil lubricated axleboxes as standard, so many of these wagons were reconditioned after WW2 and continued in British Railways service through the 1950s.
8 plank wagons were favoured by many collieries producing lower density coal as the extra height allowed a full 12 ton load to be carried. Most of these wagons therefore had end doors to permit tipping of the load directly into bunkers of ships holds.

A detailed model kit building a Gloucester RCW 7 plank height wagon built to the RCH 1887 specifications. This kit has fixed ends and side doors, typical of the type used by local coal merchants who did not need an end door. The 7 plank body would contain 12 tons of coal and featured continuous or solid top planks, making the body much stronger. These wagons were usually painted in attractive advertising liveries with their owners names and business.

The Railways Clearing House produced an updated set of wagon designs in 1923, modernising the wagon fittings to include now oil lubricated axle boxes. Widely adopted as the 'standard wagon' for private owners the 7 plank open wagon was selected by the LMS and LNER as their standard type for mineral traffic. Wagons to this design were also owned by the SR for mineral traffic around the Kent coal field and leased by GWR when additional capacity was needed In addition many private owners names appeared on the sides of these wagons, making this one of the most useful wagon kits in the Parkside range.

This kit models the 8 plank height version of the 1923 wagon with a steel underframe. These wagons were commonly ordered by collieries and coal factors and for use with less dense coals, where the extra height was needed for a full 12 tons load. The LNER owned a number of wagons built to this design for mineral traffic. The robust steel underframe many of these wagons lasted in service with British Railways into the 1960s, making this kit suitable for a range of liveries from private owners through wartime economy lettering and unpainted wood finish to BR grey.
