Diagram E141 coaches were frequently formed into 2-coach sets and use of a semi-permanent coupling between the coaches, eliminated the need for buffers between the coaches. Some lots were ordered with full buffers and drawgear at both ends and while many were 'paired' the pair could quickly be split for use as single coaches or as additional 'strengthening' coaches for busier trains, maintaining an appropriate ratio of first and third class compartments.

From the 1930s road omnibuses could often provide quicker service to market towns than the railways, where often a change of train would be needed. Declining passenger numbers often saw minor branch lines' trains reduced to just one coach, making the single brake third of brake composite coaches very useful to provide passenger service on a small layout.
