Heljan are producing a model of the GWR 47xx class 'Churchward Fast Freight' 2-8-0 locomotives. This small class of goods engines were built between 1919 and 1923 specifically to haul the pincipal express goods trains which formed the backbone of the GWRs' accelerated goods services. These trains were formed of vacuum braked wagons and ran ;through the night at speeds up to 60mph, providing next day service between several of the major cities served by the Great Western.

Essentially an enlarged version of the 43xx 2-6-0 moguls the 47xx engines rode on 5'8" drivers, in place of the smaller 4'7" wheels of the plodding heavy freight 28xx class. To keep the big cylinders supplied at speed a huge boiler was designed, giving the engines an impressively powerful look.

Between overnight goods train services the 47xx engines were often used on local passenger services during daylight hours and on busy summer Saturdays when extra coaches were added, were often assigned to the most heavily loaded West-country expresses.
