When she entered service, Bremen captured the Blue Riband from Mauretania which had held the record for over 20 years. Conversion of Mauretania to oil firing and other modifications meant that Mauretania could cross the Atlantic more quickly than her Blue Riband record even in old age but she was not capable of beating Bremen.

Bremen was ultimately destroyed during WW2 by a fire at her berth in Germany although sistership Europa survived WW2.
