The Belknap class was an attempt to make a cheaper destroyer than the Adams class but with some anti-submarine capability using the SQS-26 sonar. Ultimately, the Leahy class hull was used together with Terrier missiles and DASH helicopters and an effective warship was produced economically. Belknap herself was badly damaged in a collision with USS John F Kennedy in 1975 but re-built but these ships were never fitted with the Aegis system.
