The Alguada Reef represents a major hazard to shipping being at right angles to the direct route from Mumbai to Myanmar. The reef is low lying and parallels the coast of Myanmar for many miles and forcing ships to take a detour taking more than half a day on the passage. In the 1860s, the British Admiralty recommended the building of a lighthouse at the southern end of the reef marking the point where it would be safe for ships to take the direct course to their destination. The lighthouse had to be tall to project its light over a long distance and strongly built to withstand tropical cyclones. The chosen design bears more than a passing resemblance to the Skerryvore  lighthouse in the Hebrides and is the tallest off-shore lighthouse in the area. This lighthouse is still operating today, flashing every 10 seconds.
