A pair of decorative Victorian/Edwardian era cast iron arch bridge sides.
Length 110mm

Note, bridge sides only are supplied, for abutments use kit SS64, or a suitable facing with brick/stone paper or embossed plasticard finish.
While this bridge is shown with a railway line passing over it does have a rather light-duty look to it, so may be better deployed as a footpath/road bridge. One of the large diamond-shaped weight limit signs could be used (available from the Tiny Signs range)

A nicely detailed kit building a light-weight girder type rail bridge wide enough for a single line of track. Stone abutments and decking parts are supplied with the kit. Suitable for crossing a narrow track or lane.
length 70mm

Occupation bridges and crossings were provided to ensure that land owners and farmers had access to fields on either side of the railway line as it crossed their land. A girder bridge would often be used if there was not enough height clearance to permit an arch bridge to be built, or when the purchase of a pre-fabricated bridge was actually less than the cost, in both time and material, of building a brick arch.

A plastic kit building a model of a stone-built under-track cattle creep or culvert.
64 x 60mm arch walls, plus angled wing walls.

This is a small type of bridge constructed to allow access through a railway embankment. A cattle creep kept farmers fields connected as the railway crossed his land, providing a trackway to the other side of the railway. A culvert is a small bridge over a stream, ensuring water could still flow freely even in a flood state and would not build up, potentially causing a collapse of the embankment.

A useful plastic kit building an early bow type girder bridge. supplied with stone abutments and decking materials.

Bow plate girder bridges were among the first types of plate girders used, but as train weights grew these early girders were unable to cope and were replaced on mainline routes by deeper girders (eg kit SS57). Where train loads were lighter on minor railways and branchlines bow type girders could still be found.

Railways were one of the first users of the new electrical technology and telegraph, first with overhead cabling, then with ground level cabling, often protectedwithin a pre-cast concrete trunking.

Today almost every major line in Britain has one of these concrete trunkings running alongside it, carrying the cabling to connect, power and control signals and telephones.

Wills Kits SSM320 OO Modern Large Semi-Portable Lineside Signalling Equipment Building

The complexities of modern signalling systems often requires a larger building to house the equipment required to connect, work and monitor junctions and level crossings than the familiar aluminium lineside cabinets.
This kit makes one of the semi-portable buildings now favoured by railway companies, as the equipment can be prepared, installed and tested at workshops. The building can then moved to site and quickly connected up as part of a larger planned line maintenance closure.

This kit contains parts to build two piers and three arches. The finely moulded parts represent typical stone courses so commonly found on such a structure. Also, as per the prototype, the brick courses of the underside section of the arch are accurately moulded. All parts come ready-coloured in appropriate stone buff (to match the Wills Materials Pack SSMP200) and brick red. A useful feature of the kit is the ease with which it can be converted from a double-track to single-track structure, simply by reducing the width according to the pre-marked score lines. These take the form of a deep ‘v’ indentation which allow the process of making an accurate cut easier.

Dimensions for the double-track structure kit as supplied are: L 423mm - W 122mm - H 237mm

A useful kit producing a line of timber storage shelters. These simple structures were used to keep timber dry in storage. This structure is an ideal base structure for a timber or builders' merchants business, which could be served by a railway siding, or situated adjacent to a railway goods yard. Many coal merchants diversified into building material supply, keeping their wagons busy collecting timber, bricks and aggregates through the summer when coal demand was low.

Until now the connection between the signal box and turnout has remained mysteriously invisible, but with these new items from Wills replicating the real thing has become a possibility. The subject of point rodding can be a complex one, but the kits break down everything into the various components needed, and allows a wide variety of configurations to be created suitable for specific track plans.

Kit SS89 contains:
  • 14 crank bases (choice of 3 heights)
  • 8 assorted crank arms
  • 2 compensators
  • 2 complete facing point locks with deflector ramps
  • over one metre of square section rodding with moulded-in supports
Kit SS90 is an extension kit, containing another two metres or so of square section rodding with supports. The parts should be glued together using a proprietary liquid poly cement, and the whole assembly is best fixed to the baseboard using an impact adhesive BEFORE ballasting the track. Although moulded in grey plastic, which represents the galvanised steel of the prototype, the modeller can add a little weathering to help it blend into the scene. The packaging includes a comprehensive set of assembly notes to help the modeller achieve a realistic model of this common prototype.

Wills Kits SSM318 OO Modern Gated Level Crossing Plastic Kit

Wills Kits are moulded plastic which can easily be adapted to fit many locations and provides for easy modification to different styles of gates etc. This modern level crossing set is under development, but is planned to include four level crossing warning flasher units, road traffic warning signs and four barrier gates with mechanism boxes, arms and full skirts (all non-working).

The set can obviously be quickly modified to singe gate format for narrow country lanes and no doubt the skirts could be cut away for barrier arm only type crossings installed where pedestrian traffic is not expected.

Wills Kits SSM321 OO CCTV Cameras, Posts and Lights. Pack of 2

CCTV cameras are used to monitor railway level crossings, allowing signallers to quickly check that the crossing gates are working and spot any obstructions of the railway, like vehicles becoming trapped between the gates. The cameras and lighting (often now infra-red to avoid nuisance to nearby houses) for nighttime observation are mounted on tall and substantial posts, protecting them from vandalism and able to resist collisions from road vehicles.

Ratio are producing a pack of two of these CCTV camera posts as part of their modern level crossing set, but these are sure to have uses elsewhere on modern era layouts, providing security surveillance for station platforms and car parks etc.

Realistic looking and ready-to-place. Styrene Wood Planks are notched to fit over rail spikes. Includes shims to correspond to proper code - cut as needed. Two crossings in each package.

Before the advent of modern, well-built tarmac road surfaces the railway companies made extensive use of wood timbers for level crossing decking as the timbers could easily be removed to maintain the tracks below. Many level crossings on minor roads and farm crossings still have timber baulks to retain the infill between the tracks.
