After the surrender of the Argentine Forces on the Falklands, a larger and faster aircraft was required than the Harrier to provide air defence for the Falklands.  The RAF despatched a Squadron of UK Phantoms FGR2 to fill the requirement, but the UK had its NATO commitments, and this means that a RAF Squadron had to be removed from the NATO order of battle.   By the early 1980's no new versions for the British Phantom were been built, so we had to go to the US Military Bone Yard and pick out a Squadron of the newest airframes we could get.  These were ex US Navy F4J modified to F4S Spec, and in only two years 74 Squadron Flying Tigers became operational on the Phantom F3, but due to the new Tornado designated for service as the Tornado F3, the Phantoms were generally known as Phantom II F4J(UK).  This was only a stop gap arrangement, but it lasted from 1984 to 1992.   These were also the fastest Phantoms in UK service and the crews used US Navy flight gear.   Tiger Hobbies model represents an aircraft from RAF Wattisham towards the end of the F4J(UK) service.
