The corvette Le Tonnant was a late 18th century French privateer and was typical of this class of ship. Carrying a large area of sail and highly armed with small calibre guns these ships, unlike pirate ships, flew their national flag. This ship should not be confused with the larger 80 gun ship of the same period also named Le Tonnant that was sunk at Abukir in 1798.
Plank on bulkhead assembly uses pre-cut plywood. All fittings are finished and ready to use, some parts must be cut from wood supplied. Bow and stern fillers assure correct hull shape, and double planking is done in limewood and walnut.
Brass figurehead, stern ornamentation and photo-etched brass parts are intricately detailed. Armament consists of a full set of cast metal cannon, ranging in size from 11 to 30 millimeters. kit is complete with cannon carriages as needed, gun port lids, silk screened flags, five diameters of rigging line, plans, illustrated instructions.
