De Havilland F20 VZ-708 801 Sqn. HMS Implacable
We've chosen to model the fourth release of our 1:72 scale Sea Hornet as
it served with 801 Squadron in 1950 the last year of its deployment
aboard the aircraft carrier HMS Implacable. The following year, it was
moved to HMS Indomitable and in June 1951, the Sea Hornets were replaced
by Hawker Sea Furies. 801 Squadron had been the only unit fully
equipped with Sea Hornet F20s, dating back to June 1947 at RNAS Ford.
They subsequently moved to Arbroath before embarking on HMS Implacable.
Sadly, like the land-based Hornet which also features in the Oxford
Aviation series, there are no complete examples in existence today.

Our replica is painted in dark sea grey on the upper side with matt sky
underside. The RAF roundels are printed on the upper and lower outer
edges of the folded wing feature as well as on both sides of the
fuselage. The Sea Hornet's Royal Navy lettering VZ 708 is printed on
the underwings with the number 456 along the rear fuselage. The cockpit
is also well detailed with a black instrument panel, black seating and
black general interior. Externally, the model has a retracted/extended
undercarriage and includes the arrestor hook. The wheel well and inside
doors, wheel struts and hubs are all given a silver finish. The gun
ports and ejector slots are matt black and the exhaust pipes are a
realistic rusty brown.

Oxfords Third Release of the DeHavilland Puss Moth liveried as G-ABBS Kings Flight
This very colourful livery on our De Havilland Puss Moth represents the
aircraft as used by HRH The Prince of Wales in 1931. Decorated in
bright blue, red and light grey, the aircraft lettering G-ABBS is
printed on the upper and under wings and also along the fuselage. The
fine wing struts and wheel hubs are painted bright red and a black
finish is given to tyres, cockpit interior and tail skids.

The two/three-seater passenger high wing monoplane, designed and built
by De Havilland between 1929 and 1933, was a particular favourite with
the flourishing rich and famous private plane market in the UK. Because
of its speed of around 124 mph and performance, it was also a favourite
aircraft for pilots taking part in air races, including the famous Amy
Johnson, whose Puss Moth Jason II' is already in the Oxford Aviation
range.
Oxford Diecast 1/72 Junkers Ju-87 Stuka Aircraft Model AC004
Junkers Ju-87 Stuka Aircraft Model
The Junkers Ju 87 was a two seater German ground attack aircraft. It earned the name Stuka from the German word Sturzkampfflugzeug meaning 'dive bomber'.Designed by Hermann Pohlmann, it first flew in combat during the Spanish Civil War in 1936. Between 1938 and 1944, around 6500 Ju 87s were made. Its dintinctive inverted gull wings - specially reinforced to cope with the steep dives and recovery - and fixed 'spat' undercarriage were instantly recognisable but it was the wailing siren noise as it dived in bombing mode that left a haunting memory for its victims on the ground. The Ju 87 was a strong, accurate and effective aircraft but it was outshone by the Allied aircraft during the Battle of Britain, where its poor manoeuvrability and speed became apparent, makingit an easy target. Stg 77, along with Stab.III, participated in the August 1940 offensive where they were centred on the northern coast of France, suitably positioned for an attack against England. Our model represents the Ju 87 Stuka as it appeared during that time.

The Messerschmitt Bf109 was designed in 1934 by Willy Messerschmitt for potential use as a high speed, short-range bomber interceptor. The first variants were relatively low powered but later variants incorporated major redesigns, including a heavier engine, more armaments and the provision for a long range drop tank to rectify its short-range limitations.

Oxford Diecast 1/72 Hawker Typhoon IB Sqn Ldr B G Stapleton, OC 247 Sqn Eindhoven, December 1944 AC013
The Hawker Typhoon MK1B was built with 20mm cannon, as opposed to the 12 machine gun armament of the MK1A and the first of them were assigned to 609 Squadron, commanded by Sqn Ldr R P (Roley) Beaumont in November 1941. Roley Beaumont was to become one of the famous test pilots after the war. The MK1b performance at high levels was disappointing but they made up for it at lower altitudes. At the time, the Focke Wulf Fw 190s were causing a lot of damage during sneak low level raids over the south east coast of England, but they misjudged the power of the Hawker Typhoons, which excelled in this low level form of aerial combat. The Typhoons were faster than the Fw 190s, scoring great success against the Luftwaffe aircraft. This subsequently lead to their elevation to the status of fighter bomber and, armed with rockets, they went to attack enemy ships in the English Channel, as well as performing very successful attacks over many Western European battle grounds during the final stages of the war. The last Typhoon came off the production line at the end of 1945, at which point it had become a legend in its time. Our example represents the Hawker Typhoon MK1b of Sqn Ldr B G Stapleton, OC 247 Sqn., Eindhoven in December 1944. With the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain this year, the Oxford Aviation WWII Typhoon is one that has certainly earned its place in your WWII airfield line up.

Oxford Diecast 1/72 Gloster Gladiator RAF WW2 Biplane Model AC023
The Gloster Gladiator was a British-built biplane fighter manufactured by the Gloucestershire Aircraft Company. It was used by the Royal Air Force (RAF) and the Royal Navy (as the Sea Gladiator variant) and was exported to a number of other air forces during the late 1930s. Although reminiscent of older biplanes of the First World War, the Gladiator was something quite different. Powered by the 840-horsepower Bristol Mercury VIIIA 9-cylinder air-cooled radial engine, it had considerable grunt with a top speed of 257 miles per hour, along with being heavily armed (for the time) with four Browning.303 machine guns. Several squadrons of Gloster Gladiators fought with some success in the early days of WWII in France, alongside the RAF's newer Hawker Hurricane. 247 Squadron, equipped with Gloster Gladiator fighters were tasked with the defence of the Royal Navy Dockyards at Davenport and Plymouth during the Battle of Britain until replaced by Hawker Hurricanes. The Gloster Gladiator is probably best remembered for its stoic defence of Malta when three Gloster Gladiators, nicknamed Faith, Hope and Charity, although outgunned and outperformed, held off the might of the six air force until relieved by the Hawker Hurricanes of 261 Squadron.

this 1:72 scale model is the first WWI aircraft to enter the Oxford
Aviation series and is particularly pertinent as we commemorate the
100th Anniversary of the conflict that was to change history in so many
ways. You can see one preserved example displayed as part of the
Shuttleworth Collection at Old Warden in Bedfordshire.

In real life, the Bristol F2B was a British 2-seater biplane fighter and
reconnaissance aircraft of the First World War, flown by the Royal
Flying Corps.

Our authentic little replica is painted with brown upper wings and buff
underwings. The propellers have been given a brown wood effect finish
whilst propeller hubs, engine covers and the engine cowl bands are
painted in various shades of grey. The red, white and blue RFC roundel
appears on both the upper and lower wings and on the fuselage. The
tailfin also features the vertical red, white and blue bands, along with
the plane identity number D8096. The two machine guns - the
forward-firing gun for use by the pilot and the second by the observer
crew member - are both painted black and are positioned on black
mountings in the open rear cockpit.
