The 417th Night Fighter Squadron USAAF was only the fourth such unbit to be formed. In the early days of WW2 the United States sent observers to England to study how the latest form of night air warfare would take shape and it very soon became apparant to them that a night fighting capability was of increasing importance.

Equiped with the Bristol Beaufighter, an aircraft built to accomodate airborne intercept radar sets, the 417th built a healthy score of downed German and Italian aircraft as the Mediterranean war progressed.

Lt. Col. Braxton Eisel, a member of the American Aviation Historical Society, has commanded ICBM launch sites, flown E-3 AWACS operations and worked as official historian. He is a regular contributor to leading aviation journals aimed at professionals and enthusiats, including Smithsonian publications, Flypast, and Air Force Magazine.

Over 180 pages, plus 48 pages of photographs and illustrations.
