The Fruit D was the last of the GWR design ventilated fruit vans, this design with three side doors not appearing until after WW2. Many were built in the early BR years and were one of the last GWR types to be found in service, lasting into the early 1980s.
These vans were suitable for running in secondary passenger trains and parcels trains. Later many were adopted by the engineering departments, carrying spare parts for locomotives between depots.

This model painted in the GWR parcels brown livery with 1930s shirtbutton logo.

Model of a 20-ton steel bodied open coal wagon in GWR livery.

The GWR promoted the use of these high capacity and durable 20-ton wagons in the 1930s, having used them for many years to haul locomotive coal. The company built a fleet of these wagons, hiring them to coal traders to encourage them to replace their old 10 and 12 ton capcity wooden wagons.

Bachmann Graham Farish N Gauge 373-261 GWR Cattle Wagon GWR Goods Grey

The GWR were very progressive with their design of cattle wagons, incorporating robust steel frames, oil lubricated axleboxes and vacuum train brakes in the early 1900s. This allowed cattle trains to be run at higher speeds and the wagons could be attached to branch passenger trains, cutting journey times.
The sound, well-thought-out design of these wagons saw the design adopted with only minor alteration as the British Railways standard.

This model is painted in the GWR dark goods grey livery with 1930s-BR lettering. Era 3

Model announced 2013.

The LMS adopted the final design of Midland Railway guards' brake van as the companys' initial standard design. The cabin provided good accomodation for the guard with the handbrake standard in the centre of the van, easily and quickly accessible, and access verandhs at both ends made boarding easy.
While longer than ordinary goods wagons the short brake van did not ride well at the higher speeds which goods trains were attaining in the 1930s and this design was replaced by long wheelbase vans, but with several thousand of these brake vans in service many remained in us into the 1960s.

This model is painted in the early LMS grey livery.

New model announced 2015

A detailed model of the Southern Railways' bogie goods brake vans. These vans were introduced to ensure the guard had a smooth-riding vehicle suitable for travel at the higher speeds of express goods and parcels trains. The commodious accomodations and enclosed verandahs were also appreciated by the engineers, who made good use of these vans as riding, messing and equipment/tool carriers until the 1990s.
Several are now preserved and used to offer brake van rides during heritage railway gala days.

This model is painted in the Southern Railways goods brown livery, which has also been applied to a number of preserved vans.

Graham Farish N 377-088 7 Plank Wagon End Door GWR Dark Grey

All of the major railway companies owned fleets of open wagons, these RCH standard type 7 plank wagons with end doors were normally used for mineral traffic, including coal, as the end doors allowed the wagons to be emptied quickly by up-ending on a tipple. The GWR was a less prolific user of the RCH standard type wagon, preferring to build its own designs, however the company often had a small fleet on hire from the Gloucester RCW for coal traffic in South Wales.

An excellent model from Dapol of the iron bodied gunpowder van, complete with red cross hazard marking to warning staff that the contents may be dangerous and the van should be shunted carefully. Due to the robust construction some of these vans remained in service safely moving explosives until replaced in the 1980's.

Gunpowder vans were used for the transport of many types of explosives, ranging from early powders to later dynamite and the more stable gelignite. The vans were also used for military traffic, including the delivery of small consignments of ammunition, live and practice, for the use of Territorial Army, reserve units and Army/Navy/Air Force cadet units. A good reason for one single wagon of 'explosives' to arrive at any railway station from time to time.

The London and South Western Railway  built a significant number of these 'Road Van' for service on branchlines and local goods trains. These good guards brake vans were fitted with side doors, allowing small consignments to be carried in the van and distributed by the guard, saving the use of an individual goods box van. These vans would often also be used on 'mixed' trains, conveying passenger coaches and goods wagons in the same train, providing accommodation for the guard at rear of the goods portion of the train.
Many of these useful vehicles were distributed around the Southern Railway after grouping and several have been preserved.
