The 1923 design mineral wagon was used by all of the 'big four' railway companies and built for many private owners from large colliery fleets to single wagons for a merchant. The private owner wagons were pooled as common users at the outbreak of WW2 and entered British Railways stock at nationalisation, being given P prefixed numbers, joining the similar wagons from the LMS (M prefix) LNER (E prefix) and Southern (S prefix). Fitted with oil lubricated axleboxes and many under 20 years old still at 1948 the 1923 wagons were often overhauled for further service while more steel bodied 16 ton mineral wagons were being built, allowing the older grease lubricated axlebox wagons were scrapped first.

Dapol Lionheart Trains LHT-F-071-001 O Gauge BR 7 Plank Open Wagon
Delivery Spring 2018

A detailed ready to run O gauge 7 plank open wagon model from Lionheart Trains tooling.
Finished as a RCH 1923 standard wagon running in British Railways service in the 1950s.

Following WW2 many former private-owner 1923 RCH standard wagons which had been built through the 1930s and early war years were still in a reasonably serviceable condition. British Railways generally repaired these wagons, painting them in plain grey livery with the intention that these wagons provide a further 10 years of service. This allowed older and more decrepit wagons to be scrapped first as the fleet of new 16-ton steel bodied mineral wagons was built.
