The big four railway companies operated their internal trains with their own coaches, presenting a unified image. There was variety under the surface however and many trains crossed the boundaries, being passed on to another company with just a change of engine. Through trains linked major cities, with the participating companies providing coaches or trains in proportion to the milage run on their tracks. Many connections were provided by through coaches, some trains were even formed entirely of portions from/to the other railway companies.

All of these coaches are Era 3 models. Details of the periods covered by the era numbers can be found here.

Bachmann Branchline OO Gauge 3 Coach Set of SE&CR Birdcage Stock Coaches. South Eastern & Chatham Dark Lake Livery

Includes one each of 39-600 Brake Composite, 39-610 Composite, 39-620 Brake Third, mainland UK delivery
Release expected late autumn

One each of Bachmann's new and very impressive South Eastern & Chatham Railway (SECR) 60-feet length passenger stock featuring raised, glazed lookouts in the roof over the guard's compartments. These raised lookouts gained the stock the birdcage sobriquet due to the similarity to an aviary enclosure.

Built between 1912 and 1915 these distinctive coaches had long service lives, the Southern Railway investing in electric trains rather than building new steam hauled stock suburban services. The SE&CR coaches proved very durable, many lasting almost 50 years, being withdrawn by British Railways ad new Mk.1 stock became available in the later 1950s. A number have survived into preservation and been restored to service.

This SE&CR livery matches the C class 0-6-0 locomotives produced by Bachmann and the H class 0-4-4 tank engines expected from Hornby later this year.

Hornby Railways OO Gauge R4762 GWR Collett Corridor Composite Coach Right Hand Corridor GWR Chocolate & Cream

Collett 'Bow Ended' Standard 57' Corridor Stock
When Charles Collett became Chief Mechanical Officer of the Great Western Railway in 1922, one of his priorities was to modernise the GWR’s fleet of ageing, yet distinctive ‘Toplight’ coaching stock. His resulting ‘bow-ended’ design went on to become the basic GWR design for almost 30 years and from 1925, until the late summer of 1929, the steel panelled, oak framed bow-ended coach, with inset windows, high waist and clean exterior, was applied to 57’ coach bodies on newly developed 7’ single bolster bogies.

On entering traffic in 1925, six coach sets were formed from Lot Nos. 1351-53, comprising Corridor Thirds from diagram C54, left and right handed 4 compartment Corridor Brake Thirds from diagram D95 and left and right handed Corridor Composites from diagram E127. Over the following four years, further Lot numbers of these diagrams were produced, along with an additional eight different diagrams and the design became the first choice for the important Express Trains, including the Cheltenham Spa Express and Bristolian, until the late 1930s. Many of these coaches survived in general service until 1961, being withdrawn completely by early 1963, with several managing to escape scrapping when they were converted for departmental use during the early 1960s.

Hornby OO SR Maunsell 58' Eight Compartment Brake Third Class Non-Corridor Coach SR Olive Green R4717
Hornby Railways OO R4717 Southern Railway 58' Maunsell Eight Compartment Brake Third Class Non-Corridor Coach Diagram 99 Rebuilt from LSWR 48’ Coach

New and detailed models of one of the most important coach types used on the Southern Railway. The non-corridor coach provided a maximum number of seats in each coach, essential for the busy suburban and commuter trains run by the Southern.
The SR built only a small number of suburban type coaches as several of the pre-grouping companies had constructed large fleets of modern coaches. However by 1934 the former London and South Western 48’ stock was reaching the end of its working life. Conscious of the need to upgrade the stock with a minimal capital outlay CME Richard Maunsell developed a plan to re-use the exisiting bodyshells, overhauled, mounted on new standard 58' steel underframes and equipped with updated fittings like electric lighting.
Brake coaches received an additional 10' guards office and luggage  van section at one end to lengthen the coach.
This coach along with brake composiet R4719 formed 'set 45' a 2-coach core set to which exta coaches were added to provide the train capacity required.

The high seating capacity nine-compartment third coaches (88 seats) were created by splicing one extra compartment and a pair of lavatories into the centre of the existing 48' bodyshell. These coaches were extensively used on the busy peak hours commuter services around London and other major centres served by the Southern. This coach was a 'loose' coach, used to add capacity to regular train formations at peak hours.
